Summer is here and so is the HEAT! This Memorial Day weekend ended with
temperatures reaching the high 80’s and this summer is expected to be
another hot one! Let’s
all remember to stay cool and keep our senior adult friends, our children,
and ourselves protected from the heat.
Beat the Heat
Heat-related illness happens when the
body’s temperature control system is overloaded. Infants and Children
up to 4 years of age are at greatest risk. Even young and healthy people
can get sick from the heat if they participate in strenuous physical
activities during hot weather.
For heat-related illness, the best
defense is prevention!
Never leave infants, children, or pets in a parked car, even
if the windows are cracked open.
Dress infants and children in loose, lightweight,
Schedule outdoor activities carefully, for morning and evening
Stay cool with cool showers or baths.
Seek medical care immediate if your child has symptoms of heat-related
6 First Steps to take After Recognizing
Get the person out of the sun and into a cool area. An
air-conditioned area is ideal, but moving someone into the shade will also
Apply water to help the person cool off.
Apply ice to the neck or armpits, where large blood vessels
are close to the surface.
Remove any heavy clothing
Immerse the body in cool water, either at a swimming pool or
in a bathtub.
